Konferencia aj výstava sa zaoberajú socialistickým realizmom, citlivým a problematickým obdobím v dejinách súčasného umenia. Publikácia sa zameriava na vzťah medzi vizuálnou kultúrou 50. rokov a radikálnou sociálnou revolúciou, ktorá sa odohrala v strednej a východnej Európe v "chladnom" prostredí rastúceho medzinárodného napätia a posilňovania komunistických diktatúr. Tridsať prispievateľov, pokrýva a prepája širokú škálu študijných oblastí - dejiny umenia, ale aj sociálnych, politických a kultúrnych dejín.
