AnnotationPart One devoted to general physiological principles; the treatment of postoperative pain; respiration; the cardiovascular system; fluid management; and the causes of prolonged unconsciousness. Admission and monitoring assessments, as well as discharge criteria, are included in this section. Part Two deals with patients who have special needs. Included in this section is an excellent chapter on the criteria for establishment of brain death. Both the physiological parameters and the legal implications are completely presented. The chapter on cardiopulmonary arrest is also excellent for its clarity and completeness. The addition of a chapter dealing with the burn patient is important. These unique patients are seen with more regularity in PACUs, with the increasing advances in reconstructive surgery. The increase in ambulatory surgery has created another specialized need that is changing rapidly. The chapter dealing with the ambulatory surgery patient incorporates these changes and presents an up-to-the-minute view of post anesthesia care in this setting. Part Three of the text covers the administrative aspects of the PACU. The latest ideas on physical structure, nursing requirements, and nursing education are presented here. The final chapter of the text is unique in detailing the liabilities of the risk management and PACU teams, a subject that increasingly concerns everyone providing care in such a unit. A frank discussion of the subject in clear, understandable terms will allow PACU personnel to practice with a better understanding of their risks and responsibilities.
